Spanish Data Center Market: Now or never

No doubt the announcements of the arrival of the hyperscalers, Microsoft and Amazon, establishing a region in Spain, will mark a new era in the Spanish market. We are going to become adults.

The technical requirements, the level of detail of the studies attached to the project, which are common in other European markets, are at first sight a shock for companies usually working in the Spanish market.

This is the reason why companies like Mercury or ISG, the big executors of data centre projects in Europe, are starting to appear more actively. They have the know-how, the planning capacity, the knowledge of the global supply chain, the procedures, to set the milestones according to what these big clients ask for.

This does not mean that the big Spanish construction companies do not know how to do it, but it is true that they are not specialists and need to go through a learning curve.

Although we have been working in this sector for more than 20 years, we have to accept that this kind of knowledge does not exist in our market until now. It is very limited. There are no resources. You have to study, you have to work more. It is essential to reach the necessary level.

Quark, which currently works for the three largest colocation operators in the world and with the leader in Spain and Latin America, has already paid the learning curve of realising projects with this kind of requirements and frankly I must say that for us there will be a before and after of realising this kind of work. To do this, we had to get out of our comfort zone.

During the period of confinement, Quark has significantly increased its workforce, as the project order book is the largest in our history. Not by the number of projects, but by their size. The focus on bigger and bigger data centres is a fact. We have been announcing it for years. We can say without a doubt that we are ready.

I can share with you, that by the end of 2021, Spain will have significantly increased its available surface for colocation. This surface is being demanded by hyperscalers and we are talking about really impressive magnitudes.

I don't have a crystal ball, but those who follow my publications know that what I am announcing is coming true, perhaps because I am playing with marked cards. I insist, this is only the beginning, the best is yet to come.

So we have a very promising sector, which is a privilege given the circumstances we are living through during the COVID19 pandemic.

Thank you for following me and sharing or recommending my posts.
