Spanish Data Center Market: Now or never
No doubt the announcements of the arrival of hyperscalers, Microsoft and Amazon, establishing region in Spain, will mark a new era in the Spanish market. We’re going to become adults.
Firstly because of the size of the centers that are starting to be designed, which pose technical problems that have never been solved in our market, neither at the level of engineering, nor at the level of construction, nor, and this has a significant impact, at the level of regulation by the administration.
The technical requirements, the level of detail in the studies attached to the project, which are common in other European markets, are at first sight a shock for companies that usually work in the Spanish market.
This is the reason why companies like Mercury or ISG, the big executors of Data Center projects in Europe, are beginning to appear more actively. They have the technical knowledge, the planning capacity, the knowledge of the global supply chain, the procedures, to establish the milestones according to what these big clients ask for.
This does not mean that the great Spanish construction companies do not know how to do this, but it is true that they are not specialists and need to go through a learning curve.
Although we have been working in this sector for more than 20 years, it must be accepted that this type of knowledge does not exist in our market until now. It is very limited. There are no resources. You have to study, you have to work more. It is essential to reach the necessary level.
Quark, which currently works for the three largest colocation operators in the world and with the leader in Spain and Latin America, has already paid the learning curve of carrying out projects with this type of requirement and frankly I must tell you that for us there will be a before and after the completion of this type of works. In order to do this, we had to go outside our comfort zone.
During the containment period, Quark has increased its workforce significantly, as the project pipeline is the largest in our history. Not because of the number of projects, but because of their size. The concentration on ever larger Data Centers is a fact. We’ve been announcing it for years. We can say without a doubt that we are ready.
I can share with you that by the end of 2021, Spain will have significantly increased its surface available for colocation. This surface area is being demanded by hyperscalers and we are talking about really impressive magnitudes.
I don’t have a crystal ball, but those of you who follow my publications know that what I am announcing is coming true, perhaps because I play with marked cards. I insist, this is just the beginning, the best is yet to come.
So we have a very promising sector, which is a privilege given the circumstances we are living through the COVID19.
